When you want to experience a Thanksgiving for which you are really thankful, you may find yourself boarding a plane to somewhere where the snow is falling, the slopes are open and ready for schussing, and the vacation homes are waiting to spoil and pamper. That somewhere just might be Sun Valley, Idaho, and the someplace special will definitely be our Abode Sun Valley holiday hideaways, which offer warmth, welcoming, and a beautiful touch of mountain style that will make you feel at home. This guide to a Thanksgiving in Sun Valley and a stay in our sweet sanctuaries will give you even more to be thankful for during this most wonderful time of the year.
Sun Valley Ski Season Opens
Thanksgiving is the traditional opening day for ski season in this part of the country, giving visitors a fun and exciting way to proactively work off most of the calories of their holiday feast. Feeling the crisp cold air bite at your cheeks as you glide through the air on one of 12 lifts, the sense of freedom as you push off at the top of 1 of our 120+ trails, and the joy in repeating this action as many times as possible on this beautiful and most likely sunny November day is destined to become your favorite way of celebrating the holiday of the pilgrims. For those who have never skied before, the resort offers a variety of lessons for all ages and skill levels, so be sure to check out the classes that will help you feel comfortable on the slopes.
Celebrating Skiing This Thanksgiving in Sun Valley
Every grand opening day is a celebration and those fortunate enough to be schussing down the mountains of Sun Valley will enjoy a day that is extra special. Offering live music at River Run Plaza from 8 AM until 2 PM and hot cocoa in Sun Valley’s classic winter season mugs, your rides up and runs down the mountain will feel extra special as you revel in the excitement shared by all your fellow skiers. And because the resort is always working to improve the amenities they offer, the Seattle Ridge experience was updated in the off months in 2024, offering a 6-pack chair lift and expanded base area, allowing skiers to ski more and wait less.
A Feast to Remember
Of course, this holiday revolves around the feast that serves as its centerpiece, and although your Abode Sun Valley retreat does offer a fully equipped kitchen that we will discuss in greater detail a little further down the page, the resort is featuring a Thanksgiving Buffet (3-9PM) that will allow guests to enjoy great food and some much needed relaxation. Held at the Limelight Room in Sun Valley Resort, reservations will be needed and can be made starting the end of October on the resort’s website. The buffet will encompass all of your holiday favorites including turkey, dressing, and all the pumpkin pie your tummy can handle and because you spent much of the day exercising on the ski slopes, your waistline shouldn’t be affected at all when you go back for seconds!
Black Friday Shopping in Sun Valley Village
The shops of Sun Valley Village are filled with all manner of eclectic wares, including art, clothing, and of course, ski gear and on Black Friday the sales will help you find unique gifts that will make your family think of you as the gift giver supreme for years to come. Add in the heart warming experience of strolling from store to store in the shadows of snow covered mountains, feeling as if you stepped off the screen of your favorite holiday movie and into a real life Christmas experience that will never be forgotten. The Christmas music playing in the stores will definitely add to the ambience, and stopping by Konditorei for a lunch and the most delicious hot chocolate you have ever tasted, made with equal parts of steamed milk and dark chocolate, will give you the energy to gather up your parcels and continue your shopping adventures until the stores close and it is time to lug everything back to your sanctuary this Sun Valley Thanksgiving.
